Dog-friendly weekend in Reading, Berkshire
Reading, Berkshire, is a town with great history that sits along the Thames. It is also a great ally for those who escape from London, in this article we will show you some ideas to enjoy with your dog.
Kayaking along the Thames
Reading has the longest river frontage of any local authority along the length of the River Thames, so it is great to enjoy the activities that the river has to offer, kayaking and canoeing are great dog-friendly family activities where you can spend 4 hours exercising while enjoying nature. Our favourite spot is Thames Canoe Hire which often has a lot of availability and lets you rent kayaks or canoes in advance. your dog will love seeing the ducks and will love a dip in the river. The best thing of Reading is that, being located before London, you will enjoy a clean water.
Bel & The Dragon
Bel & The Dragon is a former biscuit factory located on the waterfront of the Kennet & Avon Canal and just a short distance from the centre of the town. With a great menu served by their chef Ronnie, you can enjoy your meal alfresco or inside their vibrant restaurant, they will also offer a biscuit to your dog. If you love their food, you should deffinitely check their website as they love sharing some of their best recipes.
For a relaxing activity, we recommend you walk a bit the Thames Path, a national trail, this path covers most of the Thames and you could walk it all the way to the sea… although it would take you around 15 days! For those with not so much energy, we recommend you walk it from Reading to Henley-on-Thames which will take you around 2 hours.
Cosy annex to a 16th century house
When travelling to towns, what is best than Airbnb? We found this precious annex to a 16th century farmhouse with a tennis court just 20 mins walking from the city centre. The house has also an indoor heated swimming pool and a private garden. The hosts have their own dogs and also chickens! The main garden opens up to a lake, so you can have a swim while prepping dinner.
The narrow boat experience
The Kennet Horse Boat Company brings you two ways to enjoy a leisurely boat trip on one of England’s finest canals—a nostalgic horse-drawn barge journey or a self-drive narrow boat experience. They’re both great ways to escape from the madness of modern life and experience the slower pace of yesteryear. Just sit back and soak up the beauty of the countryside from a totally different viewpoint.
Well-behaved dogs are allowed onboard, however, you will need to reserve in advance and let them know you will bring a dog.
